Red Angel | Boudoir Portrait

Model: Rouge Polarité

This red-headed angel was photographed against a window, providing gorgeous backlighting.

Although great to experiment with only natural lighting, the high ISO despite the wide aperture had me missing my strobes!

Let’s never pass up the opportunity to step out of our comfort zones, whether it comes to technique, subject, light, or whatever else we can try!

Delicate Lace | Gothic Lolita Portrait

This moody yet soft portrait was photographed while shooting the Pirate Queen theme.

When all dressed up in gothic fashion, with props and clothing all over the studio, remember to vary up your shots to get different looks in the same shoot!

By simply stepping closer to the camera, we can get a completely different portrait, even with the exact same styling!

Let’s keep playing, having fun, and stepping in front of the camera to be our own models~

Sunset | Expectations

Sunset | Expectations

Life is consistent in its laughter in the face of expectation.  Sometimes things go better than we anticipated  Sometimes, they don’t.  They really don’t.

We’re certain our boss wants to talk because we’re being promoted, only to learn we’re being let go.  We start babysitting, only to find out kids make us crazy.  We open our first show at a local gallery, and no one shows up.  Or something similar…

Sure enough, whatever we had planned and jumped into with confidence didn’t go as expected.  When we’re pleasantly surprised by how much better things turned out, fantastic!  Glow with confidence, run with it, and see what else unexpected happens!

When things don’t go so well, however, we should do the same.  Plus a little extra.  Laugh it off, embrace the embarrassment, and let it go.  Get back into the creative work you, or at least invest in some creative down-time.

Perhaps we could use the egg on our face to make a fancy omelet?

If our ego is bruised, that’s perfectly fine.  It could use a bruisin’ every once in a while.  Just don’t let it hurt your self-esteem, and don’t make assumptions as to the whats or the whys things didn’t go as expected.

Keep moving forward with confidence, and keep your expectations high!  Don’t forget to grasp the lesson, though!  If things were an explosive mess, perhaps we should use less fuel in the future, if things didn’t take off at all, perhaps we haven’t been using enough.  Pick from the wreckage what lesson you can, and keep it in mind during future endeavors.

Things rarely go as expected.  Whether we soared above our dreams or are wiping egg off our face, let’s continue to smile, laugh at life’s turns, and keep moving forward with our sights ever higher.

Inspired Curves | Electric Violin

An electric violin has once again found its way into the house, in no small part due to the inspiring skill and talent of Lindsey Stirling and 2 Cellos.  Of course, Taylor Davis and Bryson Andres must be mentioned, as well!

Money is being scraped together for lessons this time around, not only to ensure proper technique, but to add accountability.  There’s also the idea that things might go more smoothly, hence less discouraging, with a teacher helping along the way.

When it comes to learning something new, or even seeking progress in a familiar discipline, clear goals are so important.  Modest goals, like keeping a bow from bouncing and being able to play through scales smoothly seem like a much better idea than having goals too far out of reach (like ‘one day’ playing a concert), or not having any goals at all.

Let’s keep our long-term goals in mind, but break them down into manageable, short-term goals that’ll give us the propulsion to keep practicing, and play that concert one day.

So much gratitude and thanks to Lindsey Stirling, especially, a huge inspiration in so many ways!

Laced Top Skull Skirt

Dotted Skull Skirt

This miniskirt caught my eye while browsing a local thrift shop.  At first I thought, or rather hoped, it was a covered with stars.  But on closer inspection, they turned out to be dotted skulls.

Still pretty sweet.

The lace-up top was found on clearance at a store carrying clothing, incense, candles, tapestries, and the like.  Although altered a bit to fit better, there is still some work to do on the neckline.

These photos are a definite reminder to choose a background that suits your subject.  Hoping to do a reshoot in the future with white walls perhaps, and hopefully more experience in front of the camera.

Let’s keep practicing, learning from our mistakes, and pushing ourselves out of our comfort zones.  Let’s also remember to be patient, and not let discomfort or embarrassment send us rushing.

Over these past few years, the personal style and inspiration blog The Clothes Horse has been a huge inspiration.  Not only is the fashion wonderful, but the photography by Rebecca herself and at times her husband and friends is gorgeous and inspiring.

With every post I’m inspired to dress more the way I like and practice self-portraits, and recently this inspiration finally pushed me to face certain fears.  Not only to step outside, but in front of the camera as well.

Self-portraits have been a massive draw and passion for years, and now it’s finally time to practice more, overcome shyness and fears, and improve as much as I can.

The Clothes Horse will continue to be an inspiration for myself, and I definitely recommend a visit to her blog if you love fashion, photography, and beautiful locations!

All clothes thrifted; shoes are a hand-me-down.

Let’s keep pushing forward, practicing, and facing our fears, if only one baby step at a time.

Like the Moon

Like the Moon

Overhead shot of a lamp outside a hotel.  With the deep orange and the beautiful silhouetted branches, this reminded me of the classic image of trees before a huge Harvest Moon.

Anyone else terribly excited for Halloween?  Oh the colors, decorations, and the irresponsible amounts of sugar~
