Forest Trail

When nature is a great love, make a point to get out and enjoy it!

Take the time to get out on hikes, explore trails, climb mountains, breathe fresh air, really enjoy it!

Even if we don’t have time to make it to the mountains every week, let’s commit to getting outside and enjoying whatever nature we can.

Sandstone Plateau | Experiment with Photographic Style

Experimenting with different styles of photography is the best way to decide what we want to do, and how we want to do it.  How we find our own style.

But let’s remember that even when we find our signature style, we’re still allowed to experiment and play around.

This landscape photograph was taken during a cloudy afternoon while hiking the sandstone bluffs in Ute Valley Park, and was edited with more of an HDR approach than my usual style.

It looks different, and obviously feels different as it’s not what I’m used to sharing and doesn’t fit with the style and brand that I’m going for.  It’s not the style I want people to expect when following my work.

And that’s OKAY.

We’re allowed to play.  We’re allowed to experiment.  We’re allowed to put out photography that’s different from our style.

Brand experts would say that too much experimentation can detract from our brand, and they may be right.  But that doesn’t mean we can’t still play around.

Let’s keep experimenting.  We’ll take approaches and create images that are different from what we and others are used to, but we might also find a new style and direction we want to take our photography in.

Red Pass | Mountain Sunset

This gorgeous sunset took over the landscape of Wilkerson Pass last night.

A beautiful view that was almost missed because, as usual, I got lost on some side roads in Pike National Forest.

Planning doesn’t usually go hand-in-hand with my photography style, whether concerning landscapes or portraits.

But when chasing a sunset on unfamiliar dirt roads, a map and some planning could do some good!

Let’s not be afraid to get lost, but let’s be prepared and do a little planning before our photography trips.  Otherwise, we might miss a gorgeous sunset!

Magical Mountain Sunset | Peace Through Detachment

This mountain belongs to the Collegiate Peaks and was photographed near sunset during a spontaneous road trip.

While working to meet our goals and live the best life we can, we come across new people, places, and things.  We can find insecurities stirring up as well.

We fear things will change.

We fear losing the people we love, having to leave the places where we’re comfortable, and losing the things we’ve finally acquired.

Detachment is needed.

It is difficult, especially once fear has already set in.  But when we lovingly separate ourselves from what we’re so afraid to lose, when we let it go and trust things will be the way they’re meant to be, it gets easier.

We feel lighter.  We feel free.

Like most things, it gets easier with practice.  Let’s breathe, keep our eyes on our dreams, but lovingly let go and trust that we will be alright whatever comes.

Let’s keep chasing the sunset, without getting too caught up in the timing.  Let’s keep climbing mountains, without insisting we make it to the top.  Let’s keep moving forward, without clinging to the ‘perfect’ destination.

Fantasy Skyscape | New Posting Schedule

Hello and welcome back to Roman Leaf!

Over the break, I had plenty of time to think about the future of the blog, and for now, posting will consist more of projects and new work as it’s created, instead of scheduled posting.

I hope to focus more on quality, not quantity, and work on narrowing down my brand and focus.

Although there will still be plenty of room for experimentation, the hope is to share more work that I’m in love with, and that supports the work I want to pursue.

Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials Tuesday will be scaled back to twice a month, so please give suggestions!

Thanks so much for your support, and can’t wait to see what’s next!

Lone Tree | Moody Landscape

Photographed this tree atop a ridge at Garden of the Gods nature park at sunrise, and experimented with some different editing techniques!

There are so many ways to go about altering and editing a photo, so let’s take the time to experiment and try new things to see how they work and what effects we can get!

On occasion, let’s take the time to go through our old files and see what we find worth experimenting with.

Sometimes we’ll find a gem, sometimes not, and it’s perfectly okay if we’re not feeling a particular image.

We can always delete it or save it for later!
