Light Our Own Path

Depression comes and goes, and recently I found myself falling down the hole pretty hard.

It’s hard to create when you’re depressed.  You’re tired all the time, uninspired, and possibly getting into some pretty bad habits.

Sometimes we need to remember that although friends and loved ones should be leaned on for support, that we shouldn’t rely on anyone exclusively.

Our loved ones can try to talk us off the ledge, but we have to make the choice to step away ourselves.

Let’s remember to be our own light on this dark path.

It’s difficult and painful, but we must keep moving forward.

Follow Your Happiness

It’s so important to make time to follow our happiness, passions, and values.

When we don’t, we’ll sooner or later find that we’ve fallen off our path and become lost.  We’re irritated, depressed, and feel trapped in a life we didn’t mean to create and don’t want to continue.

Happiness is a journey, and it’s all too easy and inevitable to lose our trail, but when we’re not sure where we are or where we’re headed, let’s remember what is truly important to us, and plow ahead in that direction.

The cycle of work, eat, sleep, day-in and day-out is easy to fall into, but it’s so important that we take the time, even a few minutes, to enjoy and feed our passions, and stick to our values.

Easier said than done, but we owe ourselves to do our best.

No matter how many shifts we pick up, how much family we have to care for, how tired we get, let’s remember to always make time for our joys and values.

We’ll feel renewed, and know we’re heading in the right direction.

Move Toward Passion

Going through the motions is no way to live our lives.

Life and emotions are always in flux, but the pattern of ‘work, eat, sleep’ is a guaranteed way to lower our mood and ensure we feel stuck.

It’s so incredibly important that we live our values, enjoy a passion, and make progress with our goals on a daily basis.  Even a few stolen moments and a small step forward can help keep us from feeling stuck and improve our mood.

If we’re feeling trapped and suffocated, let’s not dig ourselves deeper by mindlessly watching tv, surfing the web, drinking alcohol, or the like.  Instead, let’s see this as a wake-up call and turn to a passion or a hobby, and ask ourselves what we can do right now to align ourselves closer to our values.

Yes, we have to work, eat, and sleep, but that doesn’t mean we have to just go through the motions.

Start

Unique

Passion takes time, and creation takes time, so it’s best we start right away.

When we have work, school, family, friends, and other responsibilities, this can be hard.  When it comes to getting out of bed in the morning, this can be even harder.  Sometimes passion can’t even push us out of bed, and hours are wasted with nothing but oversleeping or staring at the wall.

We can’t fly by the seat of our pants and create if we don’t have our pants on yet.

Fatigue, depression, or simply relishing coziness can keep us in bed, but we can’t create if we don’t get up.  If it’s fatigue or depression, try eating healthier, exercising, and maintaining as regular a sleep schedule as possible.

Let’s keep in mind our passions, and leap out of bed each day ready and eager to create.  If that’s not within reach yet, let’s at least drag ourselves up.  We only have so much time, so we best get started.

Life Happens Into the Light

Passions | Roots

Photography of tree roots exposed along a nature trail.

Interests and passions come and go.  And when we’ve spent years enjoying and honing a discipline, it can be especially painful when the passion for it fades.

It’s important to remember that life is about change.  Nothing is constant or guaranteed to last forever.  We’re constantly growing, so we should remain flexible enough to go where the current takes us.

It’s painful to lose passion for something you used to love, but refusing to let something go and move forward can be even more painful.  We can’t always recapture what was lost by desperate pursuit.

When passions fade, it’s also important to remember that just because passion is now gone, it doesn’t mean it won’t return in the future.

Let’s be flexible and accepting of where life and our interests take us.  Let’s enjoy our loves and passions while they last.  And should they fade, let’s be grateful for the fun we had, and move on to discover our new passion.

Our old passions might come back to visit us someday, but let’s not stay put waiting for that to happen or clinging to what was.  Let’s move forward and see what else there is to love.

The Trap of Comparison

It can be easy to fall into the trap of comparing ourselves to others.  We see our peers mastering foreign languages, traveling the world, working at corporations, finding great happiness, and it can be too easy to forget our own progress and happiness.  We might feel stuck, as if we haven’t moved forward at all.  Like we’ve been left behind.

This is the trap of comparison.  There is nothing wrong with looking up to others, but it can be harmful to begin comparing ourselves and our lives.

We are all different, and therefore are all leading different lives.  We cannot compare others’ progress to our own, as we are all unique.  We all have different strengths, weaknesses, passions.  There’s nothing to gain by comparing our location on our life path to those walking a completely different journey.

It’s also important not to sell ourselves short.  Let’s remember our own unique skills, dreams, values, and strengths.  Let’s focus on our happiness, where we are now, and where we are going, on our own unique paths.

We are all unique.

The World is Big

Photograph of stars shining over clouds at dusk.

When we start feeling overwhelmed, trapped, or like things are never going to change, let’s remember how big the world is.

Let’s watch the clouds, gaze at the stars, and take a deep breath.  The world is immense and always changing.  Hardships come and go, but let’s never forget the possibilities.
