Along This Dark Path | We Choose Our Direction

Circumstance isn’t everything.

We all have dreams of what we want our lives to be like, and we all have a certain path we’ve been walking.

We can’t always choose where we start our journey from, but we decide which direction to walk.  If our current lives aren’t reflecting what we value and what we dream of, let’s ask ourselves:

In which direction have we been walking?

Have we been pushing closer to our ideals, or wandering in the opposite direction?

Our ideal lives aren’t going to magically fall into place, we’ll have to put in the legwork and start making choices.  Some choices may hard, and the journey with be difficult, but isn’t living closer to our dreams worth it?

Let’s continually check in with ourselves, our dreams, and ask if we’ve been heading in the direction we want.

Start Now | Into the Storm

Life it too short to wait for things to be ‘perfect’ before starting something.

Let’s not wait for a steady job that’ll give us vacation time to take a vacation.  Let’s use that one day off this week to go somewhere, whether just in town or some hours’ drive away.

Let’s not wait to have the highest quality supplies to start creating, but start working with what we have now.

Let’s not wait for certain circumstances to start living the life we want.  The life we dream of isn’t going to just happen, it’s something we have to work toward little by little, day by day.

So let’s stop waiting for the life we want, and start building it right now.

What do you want to do?  What do you dream of?  What small step can you make today to start living it?

Whatever it is, let’s start moving forward and making it happen!

Goals | Take the First Step

When dreaming of the goals we’d like to achieve, it’s worth remembering that success isn’t always as difficult as we might think.

We can’t climb a mountain without taking the first step, and after that, this immense goal is still achieved by putting one foot in front of each other.  Every goal is just a series of small steps, and small steps aren’t as difficult as fear may lead us to believe.

Maybe we can’t climb a mountain our first few tries, but maybe we can make it farther than we’d anticipated.  Maybe we can’t bike across the city with relative ease, but maybe we can make it to our favorite spot in town without (completely) exhausting ourselves.

Let’s remember that immense goals are just a number of small steps, and let’s start taking these steps now.  The climb may not be as difficult as we’d thought.

“Go confidently in the direction of your dreams! Live the life you’ve imagined. As you simplify your life, the laws of the universe will be simpler.” – Henry David Thoreau

Our dreams are quite possibly the best guide to follow.  Not only do they bring excitement to our steps forward, but they brighten our view of the here and now.

It’s often quite easy to tell if we’re moving towards our dreams, but it’s also easy to forget to ask ourselves if our daily actions and activities reflect that.  If we want to be a painter, are we painting?  Or do we spend our days with other activities, never getting around to picking up our paintbrushes?

Let’s remember to ask ourselves what we’re doing throughout the day, why we’re doing it, and whether it’s helping to take us where we want to go.

Hollow Pursuits

Old Hollow Tree

Pursuit of the wrong things can leave us feeling hollow.

Instead of chasing wealth and possessions, let’s build community, inspiration, and happiness.  Let’s not dream of being rich, but being happy.  Let’s slow down, follow our interests, share, create, nurture relationships, and learn what true success in life is.

Fall Forest Happiness in a Journey

Vivid Green Leaf

Having hope for the future is incredibly important.

Happiness can definitely take work, and I feel that having a positive outlook, hope, and dreams for the future are necessary.

With no hope for the future, we feel stuck, stranded, trapped.  We feel like nothing will ever change, that happiness will always be out of reach, and that nothing has purpose.

Hope is so important.  When we feel down and trapped, let’s remember that we can be anything.  We can go anywhere.

Let’s remember to dream and hope for the future, and all the happiness and positivity to come.

Don’t Just Read About It, Live It

old book too much research learn experience photography

As a lover of learning, I’ve read a lot of books.  Most of which are books on how to do photography, blog, sculpt, draw, write, speak a foreign language, paint, etc. etc. etc.

This year something finally dawned on me, and it’s that there’s a time to put the books down.  Again…

Put the books down.

There’s nothing wrong with doing your research and reading how to do something before you actually do it.  You can learn great techniques, proper tools, and basic information that can take your project a long way.

But learning how to do something isn’t just reading all you can about it.

You learn by doing.

You can’t learn to paint by reading all about painting techniques, you have to pick up the brush.  And you can’t learn to speak French by only reading grammar books, you have to speak it.

This is something I’ve been guilty of for a long time.  I read all the books I can, take stacks of notes, and end up never really experiencing much of what I’m so interested in learning to do.

I’m working to find balance, and I invite you to do the same!

Let’s not just read about screenwriting, let’s get our screenplays written.  Let’s not just read about sculpting, let’s play with the clay.

Let’s not just read about something, but live it!
