Princess | Fantasy Portrait

A quick self-portrait of a young maiden, photographed in the studio to practice makeup artistry.

Although using false lashes, a subtle yet very beautiful look was the goal, and I’m quite happy with the royal image!

This photoshoot was put together purely to practice with makeup, but ended up being a good opportunity to practice and explore with a slightly different editing style, as this time I used handmade textures and was aiming for a painterly look.

Let’s always take the opportunity to practice and wander in a new direction!

What have you been hoping to practice lately?

Silver and Gold Tone Necklaces | Shop

Handmade silver tone, chandelier necklace featuring Amethyst beads.

Handmade gold lotus necklace

Head over and check out these two new necklaces now available in the Metaphysical Blend shop!

Orange Glass Pendant

Available in the Metaphysical Blend Shop, this necklace features an orange marble wrapped in wire and snuggled under an ornate bead cap.

Definitely love the orange glow, and there are plenty of other glass pieces around the studio just waiting to be made into jewelry!

Although style varies when crafting, handmade necklaces and accessories with a fantasy flair have major personal appeal, as they can be used as future props for portrait photography.

Let’s keep our eyes open for findings that spark our imaginations, and keep putting our inspirations to use!

Fantasy Crown Close-Up

This fantasy crown has been sitting around unfinished, but coming across Marita Tathariel and her incredible art proved more than inspiring!

Jewelry, prop-making, and DIYs in general are so much fun, but I definitely look forward to getting more into cosplay and costume-making.  The thought of photographing cosplayers, larpers, reenactors, and other fantasy/history fans is so exciting and motivating!

Made from rather thin gauges of silver-plated wire, this tiara is a bit wobbly and needs to be held on with a cord in the back.  It would probably pay to watch an entire tutorial to see how other artists make (and especially finish) their fantasy crowns!

Let’s keep exploring, crafting, and running with inspiration when we find it!

New Things | Fear

Jasper Aventurine Hamsa Necklace Close

Semiprecious stones, as well as stones in general, have become an increasing interest, especially when it comes to the idea of using them for handmade jewelry.

Despite enthusiasm and inspiration, the beads and stones collected over the past few months just lingered in piles around the house.  It’s so much easier and safer just to think about doing something than to actually try.  What if we fail?  What if we’re not as creative as we’d hoped?  What if it turns out we don’t like this new interest after all, and we’ve collected all these things for nothing?

It’s easy to fear the unknown and the untested, but we shouldn’t let our anxiety stall us from trying something new.  Or even trying something we’re experienced with.  Even for lifelong painters, the blank canvas can still be intimidating.

Let’s not let fear and anxiety keep us from diving into new interests.  We may find a new passion, a new hobby, or not.  But we won’t know until we push ourselves to try and experiment.  It may help keep anxieties to a minimum if we limit how many tools/supplies/etc we get in preparation for this new adventure.  Not only can it reduce financial loss if it doesn’t work out, but we’ll feel less pressure.

Getting into jewelry-making has been a long time coming.  All things hand-made tend to draw my attention, and it’s also helped that I’m fortunate enough to live with a happy, successful, and very talented Etsy artist.  She’s been a big inspiration to not only try new things, but to work hard no matter what the project or situation.  You can find her work at Artist’s Corner Shop, Beauty in Baubles, Painted Paintbrush, and Crafty Clay Studio.

I’ve been hoping to start selling some art of my own, and I’m looking forward to practicing wire-wrapping.  And there are plenty of rock piles around the house from which to choose!

Whether we’re fortunate enough to live with one, have one in our circle of friends, or know their work from galleries online or down the street, let’s be sure we have inspiring people in our lives to push us to be better, more creative people.  Of course, inspiring people in our lives aren’t limited to artists!
