Journey of Heroes | Mountain Pass

Life is often far from fantasy, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t take every opportunity to be our own hero.

We must take the initiative to live the life we want to live, to create a present and future that makes us feel alive.

Whether that means long road trips and photographing sunsets, or building a family with those you love, or anything and everything in between…it’s our responsibility to make it happen.

Let’s listen to our souls and head in the direction our hearts are trying to take us.  Let’s be our own heroes.

Red Angel | Boudoir Portrait

Model: Rouge Polarité

This red-headed angel was photographed against a window, providing gorgeous backlighting.

Although great to experiment with only natural lighting, the high ISO despite the wide aperture had me missing my strobes!

Let’s never pass up the opportunity to step out of our comfort zones, whether it comes to technique, subject, light, or whatever else we can try!

The Nymph’s Light

Horns: Hysteria Machine

When we find ourselves in darkness and alone, we must hold our light close.

Let’s look upon the candlelight, and feel the beauty in life coming our way.  As our own source of magic, let’s use it to our benefit to create beauty.

Light Our Own Path

Depression comes and goes, and recently I found myself falling down the hole pretty hard.

It’s hard to create when you’re depressed.  You’re tired all the time, uninspired, and possibly getting into some pretty bad habits.

Sometimes we need to remember that although friends and loved ones should be leaned on for support, that we shouldn’t rely on anyone exclusively.

Our loved ones can try to talk us off the ledge, but we have to make the choice to step away ourselves.

Let’s remember to be our own light on this dark path.

It’s difficult and painful, but we must keep moving forward.

Photographed one fine Winter day while running around the hills!

Let’s give ourselves the freedom to experiment outside our usual subject styles and shooting themes.

We may find something we’re passion about, or not.  But the important thing is to be open to experimentation!

I recently did a location shoot with the lovely Yasae!  You can find more from her here (NSFW).

Although this is only one set from the shoot, it’s a great reminder of finding more variety, even within photo sets!

I loved both, and took a slightly different editing approach to each photo, but when putting together a portfolio, variety is key!

With these images being to similar, they wouldn’t both make it into a portfolio.

But, alas, sometimes it’s hard to choose!

Let’s keep variety in mind, especially when deciding which photos to bring to edit.  We’re often better off choosing a single favorite out of similar photographs, than finishing and publishing several.

Abandoned Train Car

This old, decaying train car has been seen around the house for over a decade, as it was one of my mother’s favorite painting subjects.

This beautiful piece of history is only improving with age, and sits high in the mountains of Colorado outside the mining town of Victor.

Ventures out into the mountain and rural life of farms and mining towns are always interesting.  You never know what you’ll find!
