The Flowers She Holds | Portrait

Its during our darkest moments when we tend to turn away from ourselves.  However, it’s during these times when we should be turning towards ourselves and reminding our hearts and heads that we have value just as we are.

Getting into our element, doing the things we’re truly good at, is a good way to do this.

How do you embrace yourself?

Baby’s Breath | Self Portrait

A more ‘traditional’ portrait with an alternative flair.

Let’s learn to love ourselves with all our heart and be our biggest fan, as we’re stuck with ourselves for life.

Magical Flower

Spring is here, with flowers and greenery returning to the forests!

This flower was photographed along a trail while making my way down from my first mountain summit!  Not a terribly challenging hike, but still proud!

A good reminder to let ourselves feel pride for accomplishing our goals, even the modest ones!

Shadows | Dark Portrait

A moody, dark portrait photographed with a single umbrella in the studio.

Artist Ashely Joncas has been a huge inspiration, and I’ve been trying to replicate that glossy, gritty, low-key lighting myself!

Although initially trying to use a strobe, I ended up falling back on just an umbrella over a bulb and feathering the light.

Coconut oil was used to try to get more of a gloss and a punch in the highlights, though next time I might try olive oil..

Let’s keep finding inspiration and trying new techniques!

Fantasy boudoir portrait

Fantasy portrait of a vampiress

This was quite the photo session!

Not only the first time shooting with a new lens, but the first time playing with boudoir photography!

Shooting boudoir portraits, especially with a fantasy or alternative fashion twist has been a dream for quite a few years, so it’s been amazing to finally take the first step and give it a go!

Planning for shoots isn’t something I usually do, so the ‘vampire’ theme didn’t even come to mind until the editing, when the skin was desaturated and given a slight blue tone as a test.

With the pale skin, dark hair, and bright red corset, ‘vampiress’ came to mind!  This theme fit perfectly, since the scarf caused slight irritation on the neck, which turned into the perfect bite!

Although planning can be useful, especially when working with others, it’s not always necessary.

Don’t let the absence of a plan stop you from jumping in!

Do you usually plan for your shoots, whether working in studio with a model or photographing the great outdoors?  If so, how far into planning do you go?

Let’s go with the flow, and create something we love!

Heavenly Light | First Snow

The first snow atop Pikes Peak from what feels like forever ago, probably around late Summer!

When you’ve got thin clouds overhead and snow on the ground, you’ve got a good chance to enjoy that ‘heavenly glow’!

As the temps fall, let’s remember to dress warm, keep camera batteries close to body-heat, and most of all stay safe!

Plenty of warm tea, hot soup, and layers!

Twilight Pond | Take Risks in Photography

Photography is a great teacher.

We learn to see, to get out and explore, and we’re also reminded to take risks.

Whether it comes to trying out new subjects, angles, or techniques at the get-go, or trying a new approach in the editing stage, let’s remember to take risks with our photography and our art.  Even if it’s something small, let’s try moving in a different direction.

We won’t grow if we don’t push ourselves and explore beyond our comfort zone.

So let’s get out, travel to new places with our cameras in tow, and see how we can try something new.
