Sandstone Plateau | Experiment with Photographic Style

Experimenting with different styles of photography is the best way to decide what we want to do, and how we want to do it.  How we find our own style.

But let’s remember that even when we find our signature style, we’re still allowed to experiment and play around.

This landscape photograph was taken during a cloudy afternoon while hiking the sandstone bluffs in Ute Valley Park, and was edited with more of an HDR approach than my usual style.

It looks different, and obviously feels different as it’s not what I’m used to sharing and doesn’t fit with the style and brand that I’m going for.  It’s not the style I want people to expect when following my work.

And that’s OKAY.

We’re allowed to play.  We’re allowed to experiment.  We’re allowed to put out photography that’s different from our style.

Brand experts would say that too much experimentation can detract from our brand, and they may be right.  But that doesn’t mean we can’t still play around.

Let’s keep experimenting.  We’ll take approaches and create images that are different from what we and others are used to, but we might also find a new style and direction we want to take our photography in.

On occasion, let’s take the time to go through our old files and see what we find worth experimenting with.

Sometimes we’ll find a gem, sometimes not, and it’s perfectly okay if we’re not feeling a particular image.

We can always delete it or save it for later!

Twilight Pond | Take Risks in Photography

Photography is a great teacher.

We learn to see, to get out and explore, and we’re also reminded to take risks.

Whether it comes to trying out new subjects, angles, or techniques at the get-go, or trying a new approach in the editing stage, let’s remember to take risks with our photography and our art.  Even if it’s something small, let’s try moving in a different direction.

We won’t grow if we don’t push ourselves and explore beyond our comfort zone.

So let’s get out, travel to new places with our cameras in tow, and see how we can try something new.

Tranquility can seem immensely difficult to find and enjoy, but we should remember it’s actually quite simple.

Step outside. Get some fresh air. Enjoy a cup of tea. Watch the clouds.

If only for a moment.

But let’s remember to be present and really enjoy it.  Let’s engage all our senses, center ourselves, and feel gratitude for the moment.

No matter how busy life seems to get, let’s take a deep breath, soak up the present, and make tranquil moments for ourselves to recharge.

Explore | Park Trails

Let’s get out and explore, and find out first hand what parks, trails, and gorgeous views are open to us.  Whether it’s through a park with extensive trails or a footpath along the road, let’s get hiking and see what beautiful views await.

The stone and dirt underfoot as we trail through wild grass or roadside weeds will do us good!

Flower Path | Local Beauty

A tiny dirt trail leading off into Ute Valley Park in Colorado.

I recently got a book at the library featuring gorgeous views scattered all around Colorado, and it’s been an immense reminder of how much varying landscapes and scenes are available close to home.

Hopes to visit the northwest coast and Canada still put a smile on my face, but now I’m buzzing with the excitement of more affordable treks around Colorado that could happen in the near future!

Although dreams of traveling abroad lift our hearts, let’s remember that incredible and different views and experiences don’t require a passport or a plane ticket.

Let’s check out what different sights are available to use within our local region.  We may be immensely surprised!

Fairytale Path | Ute Valley Park

It’s hard not to find a beautiful scene when taking a stroll through nature.

This view was so reminiscent of a fairytale, it proved a great chance to practice editing.  A great inspiration to try creating more fantastical and magical works with vivid colors and hues.  Bright reds and purples definitely come to mind!

Nature is gorgeous on its own, but sometimes it’s fun to push it and remake the reality we’ve captured before us.
