Winter Afternoon

Landscape photography of Pike's Peak and the foothills covered in snow.

There are plenty of gorgeous views to admire, that often get even more stunning around sunrise and sunset.  Definitely need to make it a point to practice photography during these times, even and especially during the winter months!

Ideal lighting or not, though, nature is always beautiful.

Sunset | Expectations

Sunset | Expectations

Life is consistent in its laughter in the face of expectation.  Sometimes things go better than we anticipated  Sometimes, they don’t.  They really don’t.

We’re certain our boss wants to talk because we’re being promoted, only to learn we’re being let go.  We start babysitting, only to find out kids make us crazy.  We open our first show at a local gallery, and no one shows up.  Or something similar…

Sure enough, whatever we had planned and jumped into with confidence didn’t go as expected.  When we’re pleasantly surprised by how much better things turned out, fantastic!  Glow with confidence, run with it, and see what else unexpected happens!

When things don’t go so well, however, we should do the same.  Plus a little extra.  Laugh it off, embrace the embarrassment, and let it go.  Get back into the creative work you, or at least invest in some creative down-time.

Perhaps we could use the egg on our face to make a fancy omelet?

If our ego is bruised, that’s perfectly fine.  It could use a bruisin’ every once in a while.  Just don’t let it hurt your self-esteem, and don’t make assumptions as to the whats or the whys things didn’t go as expected.

Keep moving forward with confidence, and keep your expectations high!  Don’t forget to grasp the lesson, though!  If things were an explosive mess, perhaps we should use less fuel in the future, if things didn’t take off at all, perhaps we haven’t been using enough.  Pick from the wreckage what lesson you can, and keep it in mind during future endeavors.

Things rarely go as expected.  Whether we soared above our dreams or are wiping egg off our face, let’s continue to smile, laugh at life’s turns, and keep moving forward with our sights ever higher.

Sacred

Sacred Heart

The dome of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Old Colorado City, with gorgeous Pike’s Peak in the distance.

Different things are sacred to different people.  Some find nature to be their sacred space, some find that space to be a church, mosque, monastery, temple, shrine, etc., and others still have different places that fit their beliefs, if a place at all.

Although never much of a religious or ‘community gathering’ person myself, I’ve long wanted to visit different places of worship to take in the sights, music, silence, atmosphere, and generally see how others practice and see the world.

There was a beautiful Buddhist Temple in Center City, Philadelphia, but nerves and shyness got the best of me, and I never visited.  If you want to visit someplace new but are too nervous, invite a friend to go with you!  Like a party with strangers, having someone you know with you helps.

Simplify

Landscape photography of Pike's Peak and foothills.

Although things are a bit messy right now, the end goal here on Roman Leaf is to simplify. Please bear with me as the site is updated.  Things will hopefully be running smoothly within the next couple of days, though some aspects are taking longer than expected.

A new layout may also be on the way, so some photos in blog posts can be displayed at the intended larger size.

If you have any recommendations for pages, site navigation, and the like, please feel free to leave a comment with your ideas!

Blue

Lanscape photography of a snow-covered mountain at dusk.

We can’t be happy all the time.  When we find ourselves feeling blue and stressed out, let’s keep our heads up and continue moving forward.

Let’s remember our goals, immerse ourselves in our loves and inspirations, surround ourselves with friends, and remember that this difficult period will not only pass, but leave us stronger.

Frozen Wind | Pike’s Peak First Snow

Landscape photography of the snowy Rocky Mountains during sunset.

This week brought us the first heavy snow of the year in the mountains!

It’s been quite cloudy these past few days, and when they parted enough to see the Peak a few days ago, it was absolutely stunning.  The most beautiful I’d ever seen the mountains, though it was spotted without my camera on hand, and the sky was too socked in later that day to see.

A great reminder for an avid photographer to always have a camera on hand, even and especially when running errands!

Today the skies were clear, revealing the gorgeous mountains still covered with snow at the higher altitudes.  The mountains are gorgeous enough all season, but there’s something especially magical about snow and clouds blowing over the ridges~

Let’s enjoy the changing colors and weather of the new season.  Let’s also keep our eyes open and cameras ready for the beauty to admire.  Wishing all gorgeous views, wherever we find them!

Pike’s Peak Silhouette

Pike’s Peak silhouetted by the last light of sunset.  You can see the first stars coming into visibility, as well as the bright lights along the mountain’s summit.

Hoping to one day bring you views from atop that peak.  Perhaps this winter?  There are hiking trails up the 14,114′ beauty, but the cog railway seems like a better bet at the moment.
