Heavenly Light | First Snow

The first snow atop Pikes Peak from what feels like forever ago, probably around late Summer!

When you’ve got thin clouds overhead and snow on the ground, you’ve got a good chance to enjoy that ‘heavenly glow’!

As the temps fall, let’s remember to dress warm, keep camera batteries close to body-heat, and most of all stay safe!

Plenty of warm tea, hot soup, and layers!

Lower in the mountains, the first snow of the Winter season fell, prompting many photographers out into the cold with cameras in tow!

With the temperatures dropping, it’s a good time to start preparing better before heading out.

Things to keep in mind:

  • Proper clothes: Thick pants, water-tight shoes, multiple top layers, a scarf for shielding the face against frosty wind, and a quality hat and pair of gloves.  Also consider spare clothes.
  • Fully charged main and backup batteries.  Cold temperatures drain batteries!  Consider keeping your extras inside your coat so your body heat will help maintain their charge.
  • A lens hood and absorbant cloth to keep your lens free of flurries and droplets.
  • Warm liquids.  Consider a keeping a thermos of warm coffee or tea, or even soup for longer jaunts outside.
  • A cellphone, as usual, just in case.  Keep inside your coat with your batteries.
  • Pre-scouted locations.  Freezing temps make a good case for knowing ahead of time where you want to go and what to expect, not that wandering around in the cold can’t be fun.

The season has just started, and hopefully we’ll find plenty of opportunities to get outside and take advantage of the changing sights!

Let’s get outside, get some shots, and try to stay warm.

Start Exploring | Winter Valley

It can be easy to start feeling trapped and like we’ll never be able to travel.  We want to see the world and experience new things, but let’s remember it doesn’t have to be on a large scale.

Let’s start exploring now, and experiencing what’s available to us at this moment.  Let’s keep dreaming of Scotland, Iceland, and France, but let’s get out today and see what gorgeous and new views are already at our doorsteps.

The beautiful thing about the world is that it’s different every time we look at it.

Let’s enjoy the present while we hope for the future, and not leave travel and exploration for ‘someday’.

Ridge and Valley

The HDR software Photomatix Pro finally found itself in the studio after sitting on the wish list for a few years!

We can always hope that new equipment will help us improve our work, and we should do well to remember that the actual work lies with us.  A new camera won’t create better photos, a new flash system won’t create beautiful lighting, etc.  Tools are tools, and require time and practice to be used well!

This gorgeous ridge sits near Queens Canyon, and this angle offers an interesting view of the rocky ‘spine’ that runs through the area.  Taken very early in the Winter season, which feels like such a long time ago..!

Let’s keep our eyes open for ways to help ourselves improve, but never forget that tools don’t do the work.  We do~

Spring in the Rockies

Landscape and weather photography of a snow storm over Pikes Peak

So it’s Spring here in Colorado!  Although sprinkled with beautiful warm days, half the year is still a long time to have cold conditions when you’re a lover of warm weather!  At least we’re able to enjoy a great amount of sun year round.

Cold weather has made getting outside much harder.  Though, since spending more time in nature is a major goal, it’s definitely time to find more weather-appropriate clothes.

If we find ourselves avoiding the outdoors during Winter (and Spring), let’s get ourselves to the thrift shop to find some proper boots, coats, hats, and gloves, so we can bundle up and stay warm during this beautiful season.

Gorgeous views don’t always require travel to distant locals or making long treks.  Sometimes they’re just off the road.

Let’s get out and enjoy the fresh air, and discover what beautiful views we can find nearby.  We can’t all live in Ireland, but that doesn’t mean we can’t find landscapes to take our breath away~
